MONUMENTS

Saint Stephen’s has a collection of monuments, dedicated to a range of individuals related to the city’s past. Starting above the main church entrance and working counter-clockwise they include the following:

The Royal Arms of Charles II are mounted over the South Church Entrance. To their left is mounted a monument in memory of Francilsa Frere, d.1724, and Thomas Frere, d.1732, with Latin inscription. Below said monument is a plaque that commemorates the 19th Century south aisle windows, removed during restoration work in 1965. These windows commemorated, from the porch outwards:

  • Samuel Cook, Organist of this Church , died 1889

  • George Macready Chute, died 1888

  • Mary, wife of Thomas Fuidge, died 1842

  • Frances Ann, their infant daughter , died 1842

  • Frederick John Fargus, died 1885

  • John Drew and Horatia his wife 1797 -1874

The next monument, in the form of a plaque, is dedicated to Alexander Kenneth Mackenzie.
