Money – what is enough? A Public Hearing

Wed 20 Jul 7.30 pm

Bristol’s race for wealth was built on the slave trade.

Nothing controversial about that statement anymore, but does wealth creation in Bristol always have to make winners and losers?

Does devotion to wealth creation demand exploitation?

Is taking a few grand off the pay of directors really touching what some call the real issue: runaway booms ending in gloomy busts?

Money, what IS enough?

In this, the sixth Reconciliation Laboratory, two speakers will kick-start the Public Hearing with their own stories.

Abdul Gani Ismail, family business partner in Easton’s famous Bristol Sweet Mart tells his family’s refugee-to-success story and the benefits of wealth creation.

Marian Connolly tells her story: she left nursing and community work and the security of a council flat in favour of volunteering for political and green causes. Feeling rich on little she describes her experience of how the pursuit of wealth can lead to oppression and environmental disaster.

Following Abdul and Marian, participants from all walks of life are invited to share their stories.

Facilitator David Mowat says “The Reconciliation Laboratory is an on-going experiment in which people explore their differences without losing respect for people they believe are wrong. A particular kind of listening is the key. The Hearing is designed to uncover how this can happen. The result can be memorable shifts. ”

The evening begins at 7.30 pm with delicious Mediterranean refreshments made in Saint Stephen’s Café (with ingredients sourced at the Sweet Mart).

Everyone is welcome, particularly to share stories on the theme of ‘money-what is enough?’

In the words of the old song: “Rich or poor, knock on the door and make yourself at home”.
