Saint Stephen’s Reconciliation Laboratory holds regular events to tackle difficult subjects.
Inspired by its new altarpiece, the Bristol Reconciliation Reredos, created from Bristol’s slavery past and hope for reconciliation, the Reconciliation Laboratory aims to bring divided people together in a place of safety to discuss differences.
The aim is to appreciate the perspective of others with whom we may have conflict.
The following ‘ground rules’ have been devised to make the space a safe place, so people may feel at peace when listening to or expressing opposing views.
1. Introduce yourself. Speak as ‘I’
2. Confidentiality is essential
3. Everyone is equally responsible
4. Feelings are part of the process. Give them space.
Trust there’ll be a way through.
5. Voice satisfaction and dissatisfaction
6. Become aware of your patterns or other blocks
Respect silence
7. Be silent when not moved, speak when moved
Pay attention
8. Listen to yourself and the group.
9. Avoid a “Yes, but…” response
10. Take risks. Challenge.
