Bristol City of Sanctuary – old home, new refuge?

March 12, 2011

Saint Stephen’s welcomes Bristol becoming the UK’s eleventh City of Sanctuary, supported by Bristol City Council.

However, for this welcoming approach to succeed, we need to hear all our city voices.

David Mowat, Saint Stephen’s Reconciliation Laboratory facilitator, and the church’s musical coordinator, says:

“Some people fear that Bristolians get ignored in favour of newcomers. Meanwhile those seeking sanctuary may struggle to feel at home. Telling real stories can lead to mutual understanding.”

Saint Stephen’s expects to be welcoming community leaders, and members of local government. There will be no reporting unless agreed in advance.

Saint Stephen’s Reconciliation Laboratory

Saint Stephen’s Reconciliation Laboratory aims to bring Bristol people together in a place of safety to discuss differences.

It is inspired by the church’s new altarpiece, the Bristol Reconciliation Reredos, a radical artwork created from Bristol’s slavery past and hope for reconciliation.

The artist, Graeme Mortimer Evelyn, and City Canon and priest-in-charge, Rev Tim Higgins, are pictured above in front of the Bristol Reconciliation Reredos on the night of the unveiling.

Ground rules

Saint Stephen’s Reconciliation Laboratory encourages participants to listen with care. It aims to provide a safe atmosphere by abiding to ground rules.
