Co-organiser, David Mowat, says: “Our faith is how that inner and collective transformation can take place. We try not to jump to solutions for others.”
He continues: “Two things can be true at the same time; injustice, when present, must be faced and differences need to be held together. The Bristol Reconciliation Reredos now opens up creative ways of approaching conflicts in need of reconciliation in Bristol, and we hope speeds the healing over this city’s slaving past.”
Saint Stephen’s Reconciliation Laboratory is intended to be a safe space to test convictions informed from wisdom and faith, explains David Mowat, who is also the church’s musical coordinator.
“We are experimenting, trusting our methodology to get us started, and that powerful results can flow from all our deep listening.”
We’re discerning the themes we’ll work with each month; likely to include the Earth-human conflict as played out in this city; the power and wealth fault lines between neighbourhoods, and markets over public interests.

Community Learning events November 2010
- Reconciliation Laboratory screening of Rewind, followed by discussion. This brought South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission to the audience through the prism of music and film
- Reconciliation Laboratory Crossing Qalandiya book launch searched for reconciliation in Israel and Palestine through stories of shared lives.
Follow-up after each event is important. For instance, as a result of the Crossing Qalandiya event last October, some people are seeking Palestinian–Jewish friendships, to build a better understanding of the different sides of the conflict in the Holy Land.
Our purpose is to learn a practice that is faithful and radical and makes a difference.
Each time live music and good food will help open our ears and hearts to each other.
To cover costs for this unfunded experiment we invite suggested donations of £5.
Saint Stephen’s invites suggestions for future Laboratories.
