Canon Tim Higgins says: “”It is a wonderful experience to be introduced to the great and living tradition of music so deep and full of amazing energy.
“It is a real privilege and inspiration to be led by Kim Samuels: her stunning musicality and infectious passion got us singing gospel. I had no idea it was possible to create such a sound with a group who’d never sung together before: a dream come true.”
Voice of Hope director, Kim Samuels is passionate about musical expression. Her workshops get to the roots of gospel music and create a healing sound. All songs are taught by ear and no previous experience needed.
November 2010: Saint Stephen’s offered gospel singing workshops in November as part of its autumn Bristol Reconciliation Reredos programme, and formed the Voice of Hope choir.
These gospel voices are now an intrinsic part of the unveiling in January 2011 of a major public artwork.
The Reconciliation Reredos is Saint Stephen’s response to its past links with slavery.
Unveiled on 21 January 2011, the contemporary iconic artwork is a symbol for universal reconciliation.
Canon Tim Higgins says: “Gospel came from the experience of slaves. Their pain and hope is so much part of the Reconciliation Reredos journey so it is fantastic their spirit will be heard through the songs.”
