The Drawing Exchange 24 April and 1 May

April 12, 2010

The Drawing Exchange presents a series of drawing events at Saint Stephen’s church, part of its Community Learning Events.

Good Friday’s workshop is followed by two more, 24 April and 1 May. You can attend all three, two or one. Everyone is welcome to join in, no matter your drawing ability!

Conceived and facilitated by artist, Kayle Brandon, The Drawing Exchange is not a drawing class, it’s a drawing social.

Working alongside one another, we use the drawing medium to acquire a sense of place – exploring both the surroundings and the paper on which we draw.

We use drawing exercises to enable us to feel free to experiment, play with and delve into the drawing medium and subject.

Sat 24 April The River Remains

At one time the river Frome ran past Saint Stephen’s church, joining the waters of the rivers Avon and Severn to form a natural tidal harbour.

The medieval church was built on the boundary of the sacred city of Bristol offering a focal point for merchant ships embarking on journeys of trade and exploration.

This event focuses on a drawing walk, looking into and reflecting on the past, and present remains of an era where trade was ravenous and ruthless, where people were sold along with other ‘things’ of value.

The walk looks into stories of the people, plants and animals arriving in Bristol through trans-Atlantic trade.

We also look at the river itself which bore much to the banks of the city. The walk will begin in the church where we will spend time tracing stories that reveal who is buried within the church grounds.

2.00 -5.00pm – suggested donation £5.00

Sat 1 May Future Trace

A map of Bristol in the 17th century hangs on a wall in Saint Stephen’s Cafe. This is where this drawing exchange begins.

We climb the tower to receive a bird’s eye view of the city below.

This workshop is part of our May Day 2010 celebrations.

  • How might the city look in the next 100 years?
  • What are our visions and ideas for a future city?
  • What space is scared to us in the present makeup of the city?
  • We explore these questions, drawing on images of Bristol spanning time, and imaging future visions of the City of Bristol.

    2.00 – 5.00pm – suggested donation £5.00
